Like it or not Menopause is going to happen to every woman once they reach a certain age (and before that, after periods, childbirth etc will be perimenopause – the curtain call if you want for the final act of the end of your menstrual cycle!)
Menopause and perimenopause are an emotional time for a woman alongside the physical changes.
One of the most worrisome symptoms of the change of life are the mental health related ones such as depression, anxiety and mood changes as well as changes to sleep patterns. They can sneak up on even the most positive of women seemingly over night . The emotional fluctuations can leave us feeling over whelmed .

Exercise, however minimal, can have a positive impact on mental wellbeing during menopause alongside aiding the physical symptoms of menopause such as joint pain and weight gain.
Exercise can also aid the degeneration of bone density which is caused by the drop in estrogen, again, strength training is especially vital – not only does this form of exercise strengthen your muscles, it’s also been shown to increase bone density, helping to reduce the risk of fractures from weak bones. A mix of low and high impact cardio is an excellent exercise choice for this.

Perimenopause can occur up to 10 years before menopause does and the hormonal symptoms can have an effect on training and exercise such as insomnia and mood changes affecting your energy and motivational levels.
To counteract this Joani recommends cardiovascular activities like Zumba to increase heart rate and release those feel good endorphins. She says exercise even in shorter bursts is good for the heart and soul!
Mind-body classes such as yoga or pilates integrate physical with mental focus promoting relaxation and stress relief whilst strengthening those core muscles.
The social aspects of Joani’s fitness classes are well known. You will be surrounded by like minded supportive women going through or who have gone through what you currently are. We enjoy lifting each other up emotionally whilst we work our selves out physically.
Remember Joani is only a phone call or message away if you need to chat about exercise!
